30

Thirty has not scared me one bit. The age 29 threw me for a loop, I even cried once. I think that is because I feel like 29 is a perpetual Sunday. And to me, Sunday is the worst day, way worse than Monday. The anxiety of waiting for something to happen is much worse than it actually happening. So 30 to me is a celebration. The beginning. I have had one heck of a decade. So many changes have happened in my life and I look back at 20 and don't even know that person. It seems so long ago. A look back at where I was, what I have done and some of the highlights:

  • I lived my last summer in my hometown of Chilhowee before moving to Springfield.
  • I rented my first house with two fabulous girls.
  • I moved into two different apartments.
  • I met some of my best friends who have stuck with me for 10 years.
  • I joined Facebook which created a downward spiral into an obsession with social media.
  • I graduated with my bachelor's degree.
  • I bought a car (which I still drive and will until it dies. I really enjoy not having a car payment).
  • I gained one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, one niece and one nephew.
  • I started my job at OTC, which I completely love.
  • I was named 417's Top Singles.
  • I traveled. To San Francisco and wine country (2), to Mexico (2), to Vegas (2), to Orlando, to the Bahamas, to Seattle, and for an experience of a lifetime to Central America for a month (10 cities in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama).
  • I bought a house!
  • I joined Rotaract (Rotary under 30), which has changed me in a million ways.
  • I fell deeply in love with Springfield and am very proud (and humbled) to say I personally have raised thousands of dollars for our community and been a part of raising much more.
  • I graduated with my master's degree!
  • I was named one of 417's 20 Under 30.

So overall, a pretty amazing decade. I am completely happy with all that I accomplished from 2003-2013. And now I get to look forward to the next decade and all the changes that will happen in the next ten years.

At age 20 I had no idea where I would be at age 30. And at age 30, I have no idea where I will be at age 40, nor am I setting a specific agenda for the entire decade.  However, I do have a lot of things I have not and would like to do/accomplish in the first year of my thirties.

With that in mind, I am currently preparing my to-do list for the first year of my thirties. The main job of this blog for this year will be to keep me accountable to my short-term bucket list.

I have started the list with goals as broad as becoming an actual runner to as specific as finally buying a dresser. I have been tarnished by my agenda setting ways and have KQI's to help me accomplish the goals I have set thus far. In a few weeks, I hope to have it finalized.

So now I ask you for help and inspiration on finalizing my bucket list: If you were to set one, two or a few goals to accomplish in one year, what would they be?

Ready? Go.

  1. Great perspective. I felt the same way about 29, when I saw it approaching I made some big changes in my life. So when 30 hit I was/am in a very good place with myself (for the time being). I need to get more involved in my community like you are... that was one of my goals for this year that I'm not doing too good on. We can talk running next week!

    1. I am back to struggling with one mile! I purposefully already decided I wasn't bringing running shoes next week so you wouldn't make me run!

Have you read Born to Run yet? It's next on my list once I finish Lean In (which I'm struggling with, I think because I don't have kids).
